TarynTaryn Kleinschmidt joined AGAPE’s Morning Star Sanctuary team in June 2019. We are so thankful for her dedication to our mission and her passion for serving victims of domestic violence. We recently caught up with Taryn and asked her a few questions about her work. Read the Q&A below to learn more.

What is your role at AGAPE?

I am the Service Coordinator for AGAPE’s Morning Star Sanctuary Domestic Violence program. Prior to this role, I served as a Shelter Advocate in one of our shelters. As a Service Coordinator, I help coordinate activities for our participants throughout the month as well as assist with operations behind the scenes including grant reporting, database quality control and assurance, donation management, trainings and professional development, and special projects.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love being able to help maintain the database’s accuracy so our advocates and supervisors can continue to do what they love. I also have the pleasure of being able to help coordinate activities throughout the month and see the smiles on participants’ faces.

What about your work might surprise people?

I think that most people would be surprised at the need for domestic violence services in the Nashville area. There are only two emergency domestic violence shelters in Davidson County, and they are consistently at capacity. We have the privilege of partnering with the Family Safety Center to help provide 24/7 access to domestic violence services, and we’re so thankful that the center serves as a “one-stop-shop” for victims of violence to receive the services they need.

What motivates you?

I feel incredibly blessed to be able to see a fraction of the Lord’s work in each of our participants’ lives. My coworkers provide so much encouragement throughout the work week. We are able to reflect on the goodness of God even in the difficult situations. I have told many people that this work would be hopeless without the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord. One verse I refer to often is Psalm 27:13-14:

“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

What have you learned since joining AGAPE?

Since joining AGAPE, I have learned to celebrate the little things. I have seen the Lord work in so many ways, and I am constantly reminded of the ways He watches over and protects His children. I have also learned how to change most types of doorknobs.

Do you have a favorite memory from working at AGAPE?

There have been many special moments during my time at AGAPE, but one of my favorites is a brief moment where a mom of a teenager let me pray over her. That moment allowed her to take a deep breath, and it provided us the opportunity to discuss giving hard things to the Lord because even when we are weak, He is so strong.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to be outside doing something active or catching up with a friend over good food.

Tell us a little about your family:

My husband, Steven, and I have been married about seven months and have a yellow lab named Haley. Steven and I met at Lipscomb University after both moving from out of state and have stayed in Tennessee ever since. While we love it here, I do miss the rest of my family that resides in Arizona.
