Derrick and Chris are brothers we first brought to your attention last summer. Previously, we disguised their names and faces for privacy; however the pictures shown are Derrick and Chris. They are two of a sibling group of seven adopted together in January of 2010 but became seperated when Child Protective Services investigated an allegation of abuse. Subsequent to the investigation, some of the older children moved into their own homes and some went to live with other family members. A neighboring family took responsibility for Chris and Derrick through an emergency custody hearing in September of 2010. The neighbors have loved, protected and shared their lives with the boys, but were not prepared to raise them. With four biological children they did not feel they could take on the responsibility of two additional children. The family contacted AGAPE requesting that we assist them in finding a permanent adoptive home for these two precious boys. The couple wants to maintain a supporting relationship with the boys and their new family and will do all they can to assure that Chris and Derrick have a successful transition.

Ten year old Chris (pictured above) is in fourth grade. He has been diagnosed with ADHA and is prescribed medication; however, he does not have any educational difficulties. Chris is healthy and has no specific health concerns. His personality is described as talkative, bubbly and outgoing. He is developing athletic skills and enjoys basketball, football and skateboarding. Big brother Derrick, (pictured top) is in the eighth grade and is described as pleasant, quiet and eager to please. Because he has ADD, he is prescribed medication which enables him to focus in school. An Individualized Education Plan provides additional academic support for tests. He has no other known medical needs. Derrick was protector and care taker for his younger brother whild they were in their first adoptive home. Singing and fishing are his favorite activities. He also enjoys video games, basketball and skateboarding.
Both boys have adjusted well to their current family and have not displayed any aggression or acting out behaviors. They are well-liked in schools and church and are loved by their family who want only the best for their futures. Chris and Derrick will need parents who have the time, energy and patience to get to know them and to help them build attachments while maintaining the positive attachments they have developed with their current family. Both boys have participated in counseling to prepare them to make this transition, and look forward to having parents who will be able to make a permanent commitment to their growth and development. Although the boys are older, there are lots of "first" experiences they can have with a new family.
Chris and Derrick have a great potential to do well and their lives will be shaped by the guidance of loving and supportive parents. If you or someone you know is called to care for these children who are truly social orphans, contact Jeff Fox, Case Manager, at 615.781.3000. Participation in PATH training and a successful completion of a home study are the next steps to becoming the parents who will extend the Grace of God to these children and who will guide them on their journey. By blessing these children with the love of family, the family will in turn be blessed.
